MARC-Maps: The History of Its Development and a Current Assessment

Datum Date: 3 September 1976
Promotores Supervisors: C. Koeman & A.B. Frielink

Abstract

The study traces the beginning of MARC format for maps development in the United States and follows the adaptations of the format in two other countries, whcih at the outset of the study were the only two countries working towards the implementation of a national map bibliographic machine-readable system based on MARC. The two countries are the Netherlands and Canada.

The study establishes a chronology of events, it analyzes these events and it shows the relationships between them. By doing this the study demonstrates an evolutionary trend in the resulting formats, with the later ones generally exhibiting a greater degree of sophistication than the earlier ones.

The study is a contribution to MARC maps format development from the user's point of view rather than from the computer specialist's point of view. As such, it brings out special medium requirements pertaining to systems development which similar studies done by computer specialists tend to ignore. In addition, the study examines the relationships between the map formats and cataloguing rules, notably the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and the Dutch rules: Regels voor de titelbeschrijving.
