Petrus Cornelis Jozef ('Peter') van
der Krogt, born Delft 15 January 1956,
studied physical geography at the University of Utrecht since 1974. After
the 'kandidaatsexamen' (the first university examination) the main subject
of his study became cartography, with the main interest in the history
of cartography. In this second phase of his study he prepared as an undergraduate
thesis a catalogue of globes made before 1850 preserved
in collections in the Netherlands. The 'doctoraalexamen' (degree) was passed
in 1981. He worked for four years (1982-1985) on his doctor's thesis for the
Stichting voor Historisch Onderzoek (Foundation for Historical Research)
of the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (Dutch
Organization for Pure Scientific Research) with as supervisor Professor
Günter Schilder. The doctor's degree was received on 17 February 1989,
the title of the thesis was Globi Neerlandici: De globeproduktie in
de Nederlanden. An English edition of this thesis,
included with a new section, a cartobibliography of all globes made in the
Netherlands was published in 1993.
From 1985 up to early 1996 he had several free-lance and part-time jobs, but stayed attached to the Faculty of Geographical Sciences (now Faculty of Geo-sciences) of Utrecht University as part-timer or volunteer. On 1 February 1996 he got there a position as researcher/teacher in the the URU-Explokart research program for the History of Cartography. In September 2004 he succeeded professor Schilder als leader of URU-Explokart.
Since 1992 he is part time editor of map-historical and related subjects for HES & De Graaf Publishers.
2005: The IMCoS-Helen Wallis Award. This award is given annually by the International Map Collector Society in recognition of the cartographic contribution of greatest merit and widest interest to map collectors world-wide.
2005: Volume III of Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici was nominated for the Fourteenth Award of the ILAB-LILA Prize for Bibliography.
2009: Appointed Fellow of the Society for the History of Discoveries.
